An acronym that already earns a living in two serious industries

Most three-letter domains are empty vessels. You buy the scarcity, then spend years installing a meaning.

XPS arrives with two already fitted, and neither is trivial.

XPS is extruded polystyrene, one of the most widely used insulation materials in construction. It is what goes under floor slabs, behind foundation walls, on flat roofs, into inverted roof assemblies. Every architect, every builder, every building-materials merchant in Europe writes those three letters into specifications without a second thought.

XPS is X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, one of the foundational analytical techniques in surface science. It is how laboratories determine what a material’s surface is actually made of, atom by atom. Semiconductors, coatings, catalysts, batteries, medical devices: if a surface matters, XPS measures it.

Two industries. Two entirely separate, well-funded, technically literate audiences. One acronym, and they both already use it.

Anyone can register a name today. Nobody can register a registration history. Search engines, mail providers and spam filters treat domain age as a risk indicator, and in B2B, where a specifier or a procurement manager checks a supplier before shortlisting them, an unbroken record reaching back to 2001 does work that no budget replicates.

And the date carries a story of its own. .info was the first unrestricted new gTLD ICANN ever launched, and when general registration opened in 2001 the world’s investors and corporations converged on it at once. The generic words went in hours. The technical acronyms went in minutes. XPS.info was claimed in that opening window and has never left a renewing owner’s hands since.

Not „hard to find“. Mathematically finite, permanently allocated. Companies can issue new shares. Land can be built on. Longer domains exist in the billions. Of these there are 17,576, for all time, and every one is spoken for. That is why investors treat LLL domains as an asset class rather than as websites.

Now apply the filter almost nobody applies: how many of those 17,576 are already established technical acronyms with a live industrial user base? Not many. This is one of them.

Why the insulation reading alone would justify it

Europe is in the middle of the largest building-renovation programme in its history. Energy efficiency requirements, retrofit obligations, heating-cost pressure and climate targets have turned insulation from a commodity into a policy-driven growth market.

XPS sits at the demanding end of it: high compressive strength, low water absorption, the material you use where others fail. Under load-bearing slabs. Below grade. On inverted roofs. In cold storage. In road and rail construction.

And the buyers of that material search by the abbreviation, not by the chemistry. Nobody types „extruded polystyrene foam board“ into a browser. They type XPS.

Why the spectroscopy reading is worth as much

Surface analysis is a small, high-value industry with an unusually wealthy customer base: semiconductor fabs, battery manufacturers, coating specialists, catalyst developers, pharmaceutical labs, university research groups.

An XPS instrument is a six- or seven-figure purchase. XPS analysis is sold as a laboratory service at premium rates. Data interpretation, reference databases, peak-fitting software, training courses, sample preparation: an entire ecosystem sits around those three letters.

And it is a field defined by information: spectra, binding energies, reference tables, method notes, interpretation. Which brings us to the extension.

Why .info is not a fallback here, it is the right answer

For a shop, .info would be a compromise. For a technical term, it is a declaration.

Neither of these audiences shops first. Both research first. The specifier wants thermal conductivity values, compressive strength classes, moisture behaviour, fire ratings, installation details. The scientist wants binding energies, reference spectra, sample handling, calibration.

.info states exactly that: reference, documentation, specification, knowledge. Short acronym, self-declaring extension, no gap between the address and the promise. In markets where sounding like a sales funnel loses the order, an address that reads as a technical resource is not a lesser choice. It is the better one.

What three characters deliver day to day

Short email addresses. technik@xps.info, dictated in four seconds from a building site or a lab, never misheard.

A logo that is already drawn. Three capitals, an X with the hardest silhouette in the alphabet. Works printed on a foam board, etched on an instrument, rendered at 16 pixels as a favicon.

Cheaper advertising, permanently. Ad platforms fold click-through rate straight into cost-per-click. A short, sharp domain gets clicked more, so the same result costs less budget, month after month.

Type-in traffic. Four keystrokes beats a search. Short addresses get typed, not googled.

Weight. Acronyms are the language of standards bodies, institutes and manufacturers. Three letters read as substance, not as a side project.

Questions buyers ask

Two meanings, is that a problem? Not for the operator, who uses one of them and is perfectly unambiguous inside their own market. A construction merchant is never mistaken for a spectroscopy lab. For the seller it is pure upside: two separate, well-funded audiences competing for one asset.

Is it trademarkable? An acronym with no descriptive character in the relevant class is the textbook case for a registrable word mark, and the domain itself carries a clean record with no proceedings and no complaints across its entire history.

Why .info and not .com? Because the commercial value here is explaining a technical subject to people who must make a specification or purchasing decision. .com says „we sell“. .info says „we know“, and in these two markets the ones who know are the ones who sell.
